On a dirt road, Sarah pedals her bike standing up, ten years of age with her brown hair flowing out of the back of a grey baseball cap to keep the sun out of her eyes. Wearing a pair of jeans, light denim pair with a red t-shirt with a darker red neckline racing an older boy who wore a pair of black jeans, a gap between his two from teeth, white sneakers and a skull on his black t-shirt, passing her as they both pass Xavier who watches on the sidelines as they complete lap two of three.
Xavier watches and starts to walk away. It was sunny out so he had borrowed his father’s sunglasses which were way too big for his head.
Sarah navigates around a puddle for the third time in a row before going over one bump too many and finds her chain fall loose on her bike, with no more speed, the older boy cackles as he gets ahead whereas Sarah turns the wheel to avoid the huge pot hole, falling over in the process.
Xavier watches her fall and walks over to her and helps her up. "You okay?"
Sarah, fuming, kicks her bike and folds her arms up for a split second before throwing them into the air. "Stupid bike!"
Xavier watches her and frowns a bit. "You don't need to get mad you just get back up and try again." He walks over and brings her bike back. He sets in front of her and smiles.
"Look at the bike, the chain is off! I can't fix it." She says as the older boy flies by on his back with a nasty sneer to her cycling his way home.
"Yeah you can it's really easy." Xavier gets on his knees "I'll show you."
"Where did you learn bikes?" Sarah stands depending on him, brushing her hair over her ear and crouches down on her knees to learn.
"I taught myself." He started to work on the chain. "You just need to get it back into here." He started to hook it back up.
His hands moved slowly so that she could watch and learn. He'd stop here and there and explain to her. She smiled and watched him. She smiled and then looked at him.

"Careful you don't cut yourself, not that I'm worried, don't want grief from your parents." Sarah watches, learning.
"I'm always careful." He looks at her and sticks his tongue out. The bike is done as Xavier gets up. He smiles to himself happy that he had remembered how to fix it. "See it's all done."
He looked at his hands they were greasy and black he knew that he would have to get them washed before his parents saw or they would ask questions.

Sarah puts her foot on one pedal to turn it and notices the bike moves forward. "I guess this means I owe you a can of Coke to say thank you." She tries to keep cool with it.
"You don't owe me anything I was just helping out." He smiles. "My name is Xavier.”
"Huh, swore you would be like a Keith or something." Sarah says getting onto her bike and slowly begins to pedal.
"So I don't get yours?" He sighs as he watches her speed off.
"Sarah!" She says turning the corner and disappearing from view.
